Bendigo Benevolent Asylum

Dear Bendigo Supporters,
We are looking for volunteers to work through the admission registers of the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum to find former convicts who were inmates. The Bendigo registers are particularly good because they asked inmates on admission all sorts of questions that make it quite easy to track them: the ship they arrived on, year of arrival, place of birth, parents' names and so on. The number of Vandemonians who died in Victorian benevolent asylums is huge and these records are one of the best ways we have found to trace them. We already have a group working on Ballarat, and we're about to start on the Immigrants Home (Mount Royal) in Melbourne. I should add that the Bendigo registers are much more detailed than the Ballarat ones.

We have a start in a list that the former librarian at Bendigo Health Services, David Lloyd, compiled, but there are more to find.
The job would involve identifying likely convicts, researching them through our database and through Ancestry, the Tas Archives, and TROVE and then ordering the death certificate through us and doing an entry for the FAS database. We would give you training and support and pay for a subscription to Ancestry.

Please let us know if you're interested. You can email me on to discuss it and I could arrange to come up to Bendigo on a weekend to discuss it. We would need to apply to Bendigo Health for access, but we have David's list to get started on.
Best wishes
Janet McCalman
